Hi guys. im hoping to get registered with a scheme and give it a go on my own. can anyone tell me how to register a company name ? ta

I'm assuming you mean a Limited Company name?

Just go to any Accountant and they will set it up for you. If you are going to trade as a limited co you will need an Accountant anyway, so it is best to get it right from the start. To register a limited co is around ÂŁ250 IIRC. Think long and hard about the name you want to register as it can be a pain if you want to change it later. If you are going the limited route, you will need your registration certificate to open a bank account in the company name.

Start off as a sole trader and you can call yourself anything you like for free.

So "Growler Electrical Services" could be you, at the drop of a hat!

thanks for your replies. i have found websites where you can register a company name for 99p but im not sure if they are legit. whats the crack with being ltd ? do you need to earn a certain amount to become ltd ? what are the benefits of ltd ?
Im asking these questions because on the elecsa application form it requests a company name. im only looking to register with a scheme to do private jobs on top of my cis to be fair .

yhen just think of a name that nobody in your area has. as a sole trader, you don't register at companies house.

Registering a company name on the companies house website really easy to do, definitely do NOT spend money on an accountant to do this.

Loads of info available to help with new businesses at the moment. Contact your local Business Link service and they'll help you every step of the way. Government scheme so all free.

Personally I won't trade as a sole trader as it makes me personally liable for anything that goes wrong. I own my own home so can't risk losing that if I go bankrupt.

As director of my limited company, the worst that can happen financially is my business goes bankrupt and I can't run another for a few years. My home and personal money are safe.
