What the law regarding being able to pat test ? im getting mixed replys from friends /websites etc,

I am a full scope electrician , just wanna know if im able to just buy a pat tester and do it ? , or is there some insurance/ regs involving ( prob further costs) being fully legit.

Thanks all ( once again)

well ...pat testing is a statutary requirement for companies to have all moveable/portable/stationary/handheld equipment tested to ensure its good for continued service.....a eicr for above appliances if you like......
now then DP.....pat testing aint notifyable so if you want to go patting....then get a pat tester (callibrated of course)...and your stickers (pass n fails)...off you go.....you may find however that local authoroties (schools , hospitals etc) will probably want you to hold a formal cert such as the C&G2377.....but for your day to day stuff..you wont need it.....but i will warn you now and as i have read some of your posts in the past which tells me you will be bored to bits with pat testing in no time DP........

and take no notice of these part p schemes n all saying you have to join their scheme to pat test as its a lie.....

Cheers fella, not that im dying to do it , ( did 6 months of pat testing once, and prob took 8 months OFF my life) , so yeah it is soul destroying, but hey , if it earns me coin, Let me at it :-)

Think you need to look up meaning of statutary. PAT testing is not incorporated into law (or statute), however compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations is. Thats what covers it.

PAT is so boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only when you make it so - or don't do it right.

Anyway - off to the Caribbean for a two week cruise with P & O tomorrow - if that what "boring" gets you, then bring it on !!

Gotta be fair, I never found PAT testing boring either.

[h=3]The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

Persons to be competent to prevent danger and injury
[/h]16. No person shall be engaged in any work activity where technical knowledge or experience is necessary to prevent danger or, where appropriate, injury, unless he possesses such knowledge or experience, or is under such degree of supervision as may be appropriate having regard to the nature of the work.

The Electricity at Work act is the statuatory document that requires the company duty holder to be able to prove adequate maintenance of electrical equipment. The PAT test is one means of meeting that obligation

It is NOT a requirement that all equipment is inspected and tested, It is a requirement that the employer can prove adequate maintenance, having it inspected and tested is one way of complying with that requirement, having someone attach a sticker is an alternative method for some people!!!
