Relocating / Moving a light switch

S

SparkieBusiness

Hi all,
I have a situation where I need to relocate a light switch about 3ft across.
This is due to a doorway being bricked up and the light switch needs putting near the corner.

Due to concrete flooring upstairs I cannot access the cable from above.

I am aware that I can make access to the existing cable within 150mm from the ceiling, join a new cable, go across and come down to the new switch location. But as I need to then bury the cable into the wall what can I use to make the connection between the new and existing cable?

Thanks in advance

Tyrone

Don't think that's an option, op says that the door is getting bricked up and switch needs moving 3ft. It would of worked if it wasn't for the bricklayer.

I did think that, then thought how many light switches do you see in a door.usualy switch is besides door frame in existing wall. I imagined light switch being moved for conveniance rather than being bricked up.

You may be correct their?
Do you mean as in relocating a bathroom switch, if so why op mention joining in wall, unless using wall switch which usualy isn't found in special areas, usualy pull switch.

I think we have to ask For more info.

Looking at the evidence above I would say its a wall mounted switch that is fed from above, channeled in the wall just below the ceiling and as any good spark should do he is connecting from the top of existing drop and going across to drop down to the new switch location. Sorry I watch too much CSI :):)

I agree however trying to locate and not damage existing cable in a wall could be tricky
so another option would be to connect inside existing back box and cover, then channel out to new location.

if u cant get into the ceiling at all, i would chanell up to safe zone of 150mm, put in new box, then channel from here across and then down to new switch location. join cables with wago connectors and use a blanking plate to cover connections.
then add new switch and backbox and terminate!(jobs a good un)!

as long as u are careful when channeling u should not damage the cable!

If it were me:

Recover the existing cable from the plasterwork back up to ceiling level.
Channel horizontally across as high as practical (get it right in the corner if you can), then vertically down to new position.
I would use crimps, staggered to reduce finished bulk, with either heat shrink or self amalgamating tape over. This joint should fit in the depth of plaster easily without further digging.
You could, if you prefer, put a back box with a blank plate at the top of the wall and make your joints in that. Use an architrave box?

I would always have a inspection point, but i recently worked with a electrician who crimped a cable to extend it then hid it behind capping to be plastered over, he told me it complied and was ok. was he right?

yes he was correct. maintenance free crimps. as long as good connections and properly insulated .
