Is there a reasonably priced product anyone knows of where one can effectively switch the heating on with, in a house 80 miles away, that is equipped with some kind of SIM-powered, relay / contactor filled gadgetry?

We need to be able to provide a solution whereby the electric heating can be remotely controlled.

And no, don't say "ring the neighbours"!

?

You could get one of the cheap SoC computers to use ie Raspberry-PI, Ninja blocks, etc, most have programmable GPIO ports that you could rig to drive a relay.

I guess only downside I can see there is that the property does not have a hardline telecoms connected, so a SIM is probably the way to go. Not sure if a Pi could do this

Doesn't have a phone port as standard and you'd then be in the territory of getting BT approval for connection if you made one yourself. It does have an ethernet port as standard though.

I used it to switch on the hot water and the seconary pump. The chap works away a lot and wants the hot water when he arrives, he can text from anywhere in the world. With the right bits you can set it to text you if a fire alrm goes off, water sensors, pir. You can use it for anything if you add contactors there no limit. It has two switches and about 4 outputs. I think it was about ÂŁ200.
