Hi folks.

Current set up in the house is with two old consumer units. The storage heater CU now supplies a feed to the garage where there is a new Consumer Unit with 63amp RCD protection.

I want to replace the storage heater CU with a newer one so i can get rid of the wire fuses.

The only CU i can find suitable, like THIS, all seem to have a 63A RCD and a 50A MCB. So the MCB running to the garage where the RCD is 63amp…. is this a problem? Do regulations require the upstream CB to be a of higher value?

Any suggestions for a better CU to put in?

The 63amp on the rcd is the max allowable current that it can be used for, it is highly unlikely you will ever go near this value in domestic unless your garage has some unusually heavy loads in it?.. also the 63amp is not a tripping value so it will not act as a over current protection in anyway it is only an earth leakage device.

Why do you need such a high rated MCB for the garage ?

NOTE! - the install or changing of consumer units is not for DIY, alot of regulations need to be taken into account in designing such an install as well as knowledge of earthing and bonding requirements + a full set of test equipment to confirm the safety of the install, if you are planning to do this yourself then as a forum we will be advising you not to and to get a competent Electrician in.

Correct; the garage has minimal loading on most MCBs, other than one being installed for a 16 amp socket….but obviously still nowhere near 63amp!

The supply to the garage is just a standard 6mm T&E.

I don't need a high rated MCB for what i am using, but that seems to be the value of most of these small CUs. Also, i guess there is no real problem having a high rated MCB in the house when there is a full CU in the garage?

Any suggestions for a different CU i could use if this one is not ideal?

Its clear from your responses you lack the knowledge to undertake such work and as I have already mentioned this is well beyond DIY or what the forum will class as giving advice to a non professional, not only does this work require indepth knowledge of the regs it also requires interaction with permanently live supplies and for your own safety and protection it is thus we advise to get a professional in and why I am closing the thread.
