When is it necessary (under 17th edition regulations) to replace an existing switchboard with a new one?
e.g if the existing board has only got rewirable fuses with no rcds or mcbs and i want to split the tails and connect a new sub board, do i have to upgrade the existing board to mcbs and install rcds? or can i just leave it as it is?
Cheers in advance

you can split tails and leave old board as is. just your new board and it's associated circuits must be done to current regs. i.e RCD where necessary, Correct size cable, MCBs etc.

edit. you must, of course ensure earthing and bonding are compliant with current regs'

Thats excellent. I was aware of the testing of main bonding. I just wanted to avoid having to replace old consumer units if there wasnt a spare way available, instead, split off a heney block and put my new board in.
Appreciate your help
