Hi
A mate of mine wants me to change all his 12v downlights to 240v gu10 led's there are quite a few.He has bought the lamps and the gu10 lampholders
My plan is to just do away with the 12v transformer and wire the gu10 holder in the jb.
None of his downlights are fire rated/no hoods having been fitted about 20 years ago.Is it ok to do this or does he need to change all his downlights?
I have read conflicting reviews on this whether it's a recommendation or it's a regulation that must be adhered to.
Another problem I may have is if the new gu10 lamp will fit the old bezel and spring.
Would appreciate any help.
Cheers.

Replace the whole fitting and you may as well opt for fire rated as the price difference is not that prohibitive.

Replacing is a lot bigger job and more cost.
I just need to know is it ok for me to just change the lamps as I did not fit the fittings originally i.e. cut the holes in the ceiling.

Just do a little bit of research before you go ahead and introduce the GU 10 in the bezel to see if it fits depth and diameter. If it's ok and no fire prevention restrictions apply to the dwelling then crack on safely as we do not know your experience as nothing on your profile. If in doubt get a qualified electrician in who will be able to complete the job, make good and test the circuit.

That is the question I would like answered, are there any fire prevention restrictions on a domestic dwelling?
If so where are they?i don't want to tell my friend it's going to be a lot bigger job and cost more if it does not have to.

If it is one dwelling upstairs and downstairs then you have much less if any restriction because the dwelling is occupied by one family/ one access. Once a house is divided between two and ceiling belongs to one and floor above belongs to another then you have to be hot on your building regs regarding structure and fire containment - and rightly so.
