Hi

I need to replace two smoke alarms in my house, one is in the hallway and the other on the upstairs landing. They are interlinked, and 240 volt powered.

Which type of smoke alarm would be best for these places, and do you have any suggestions of any particular brand of smoke alarm to use? (They don't need to have the terminals on them as there is a back box in the ceiling)
Thanks for any advice

Go for the ones which have the 10 year lithium batteries,(ei161). you will be replacing the 9v batteries when they run out in the other units, and cursing at them when they are bleeping in the middle of the night

Aico

2 x optical

Don't be fobbed off with the cheaper ionisation units.....
There are certain (rare) occasions where ionisation detectors should be fitted instead of optical detectors. For a hall and landing I would agree with optical though.

I must say I'm surprised that England still allows a pathetic LD3 system in domestic new builds.

Why you are protection the escape routes in a dwelling, same as and L4 in commercial situation. Minimum requirement.

Things have moved on elsewhere though. In all of Ireland (both north and south), and I believe Scotland, the requirement is for an LD2 system. In fact in the south with IS 3218 the requirement is expected to exceed the LD2 system once the Building Regulations catch up.
