Hi I am a qualified electrician and recently was made redundant, I want to start doing a few jobs myself but to be able to do that I need to be able to sign jobs off, I have my 17th but what else do I need? 2391? Part p?

You can carry out any electrical work and sign it off yourself if you can prove that you are competent to do that type of work. You do not need the 2391 or be part p reg BUT to be part of a scheme (eg eic, napit) they will require you to have the 2391 so therefore you are then part p. Get your cheque book out, it ain't cheap.

If you want to do domestic you need to register with a scheme. Napit, Elecsa, Niceic.

You will need 17th Edition, 2391 & pref a tech cert 2330 level3.

However the above quals are the maximum requirement really. As I have recently found out you can do a 5 day part p course and get registered with a scheme. Shocking really but there you go.

Yes get that door stopper out!

Technically you don't need any quals to do electrical work! Joe Bloggs can buy his materials from any shed, read a book or ask a sparky mate for advice, install any domestic circuit and then pay the local building control to test and sign it off!!! This will be expensive.

Best to do what electricalserv says and join a scheme. Each one has slightly different prerequisite for members but rule of thumb you need the above quals.

What core Qualifications do you have?

Part P is just a part of the building regulations, they are not a qualification.

the above posts are right if you want approved contractor on the label but to be honest when you look through the mist all you need to be is basic part P (dare I say it) DI if your doing any domestic work, to do PIR's you need 2391 to show competence if anything ever went wrong (legally)

Basic domestics you just need a core qualification and your 17th. (although Electricalserv has just said 5 days courses are enough to satisfy the schemes) 2391 is optional. however I believe for NAPIT you have to get it within a year of signing up. Schemes just make it cost effective so you dont have to pay LABC everytime you do something notifiable in a domestic situation.

However 2391 is the aiming point you should be looking for as it is more readily accepted as the pinnacale of qualifications as a sparky... Depends what floats your boat.

One big benefit of joining a scheme, apart from the ability it gives you to sign off your own work is access to the scheme's technical support which is invaluable, when you need it.

As others say do your homework, then get your cheque book out!

Hi I have my 17th n nvq level 3, I am hoping to do everything but if I do part p only does that make me ok to sign off

They are all more interested in getting your £500 than what qualifications you may or may not have. At least i get a free mouse mat every year, so thats £500 well spent i guess.

Cheers............Howard

So to sign jobs off I have to register with a scheme (nic), how do I go about this and what will they expect off me

Elecsa
Napit
NICEIC

look at all 3, call all 3 and then, only then, make up your own mind which you feel the most comfortable with.

Ah that reminds me 1 x elecsa mousemat for sale rrp £500,brand new will accept £100 lol

So I don't need 2391 or my part p to register with them n sign off

Part p is not a qualification its a section of the building regulations regarding electrical work in domestic dwellings, they go from say A-Z and P is the electrical part of it,to be able to self certify your own work on a domestic property that falls within the scope of notifiable works under part p of the building regs(rewire, new circuit, change of consumer unit, any alteration to circuits in bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor supplies, then you need to enrol with the niceic, elecsa or napit to name a few, this will cost you about £500 you will be assessed on your work,if assessment proves competency, then you notify the scheme provider(about £3 per job),who then do the rest,2391 is not required at 1st assessment but they recommend you gain it within 12 months, have a look at elecsa/niceic websites and it will explain the criteria for joining the self cert scheme.
