Discuss Requiements in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

When you say you will be assessed on your work I take it they come out to your private job whn finished? And to sign off don't I obv need to test it so therefore do actually need 2391

Any tester worth his salt will have the 2391 or be hopeing to get it asap. Those who don';t have feel they don't need it or aren't com petent enough to pass it. Napit want it gained within a year. If its not gained you are out!

The 2391 is realistically the only document that makes you a a competent inspector & tester. Whether people like it or not.

Get it!

Sorry thats not quite right, I am a very competent at inspection and testing and i dont have 2391 as I do not undertake PIR's (at the moment) I could though and competently. You are tought I&T on your main course, granted these Part P DI's may need this to show competence but long term sparky's who have a C&G qualification apart from 2382 ect, which are really only updates for relevant regs, don't really need this so that statement is not showing the true facts.

Granted I'm in agreeance with 2391 being the pinnacle but its not necessarily needed. If you under took PIR's then yes 2391 is needed to prove competence other wise if you were unsure on I&T you could do the lesser 2392 which cover I&T but not PIR's.

There is a big difference to the need between both. saying getting the 2391 makes you competent is not necessarily right!

Experience makes you competent not just the qualification. Infact most course providers request that you be experienced at inspection and testing before you take the course thats what time on the job with someone experienced will get you not just a course and a bit of paper.

Just an excerpt from one course provider " it is aimed at practising electricians who have carried out initial verifications on electrical installations and require further training in periodic inspection, testing and reporting."

2391 is basically teaching you to perform PIR's!!!

PIR's?? no its not its teaching you Inspection and testing as whole. From identifiying if an installation has been correctly selected & erected to testing and signing of the work.

The inspection &testing you do on other examinations such as the NVQ3, 2330 level3 is very very watered down.

Competence in Inspection & Testing is proved by passing ther 2391! From theory to practical and thats that really

So maybe the new guys to the trade need it, It's a sad thing that it's been watered down IMHO! but time served sparky's don't really not in my opinion (unless they do copius amounts of PIR work, but then thats what indemnification is for!)
