Can someone please remind me what a) the general requirements are for E-Stops on machinery such as lifting hoist controls and b) what the applicable BS/EN standards for this are? I know I used to know this stuff…..

all depends on the installation. sometimes a E stop needs to be key operation to reactivate.

You need to do a risk assessment to find out what category of E-stop you need. Then pick the relative safety equipment for it.
Years since I've done it so don't know the standard numbers for it.

BS EN 60204-1 if I'm remembering my standards right?

Thats just the general Safety of Machinery.

For the E-stops have a look at BSENISO13849. (I asked a guy at work for the number)

The only requirement is to carry out a risk assessment. If this is equipment in your place of work, PUWER regulations are the most applicable, and are the HSE's tool of choice for prosecution.

Carrying out a risk assessment in line with BS12100 is your first step to identifying what, if any, safety related controls you might need.

EN 13849 or 62061 will determine the design, testing and maintenance of any safety controls.

60204-32 is the machinery safety standard for hosting equipment, but not manriding hoists.

I would say if you don't the relevant standards you don't know how to use them. Scattering a few estops around isn't the correct approach, make sure it's not you who is held responsible by the HSE should an accident occur, either do it properly or get it done by someone who can. Doing it properly is not a quick or simple task. Documented risk assessment, defining safety related control functions, validation and verification of your design, maintenance plan etc.
