U3a - yeah me Marr (in my best Nick Cotton voice) goes to that. Seems to be summat fer anyone.

Pete999 - I'm just a nipper in comparison but had a little time out from work in my mid 30's (plenty of opportunity for Micky taking there). I did some voluntary work over a year or so and it was so far outside my comfort zone it was in another galaxy, I used to evacuate myself before every shift I was so ... Well don't know what the word is.

however.

when I got home to my (now) wife then girlfriend, she has never seen me before or since so alive, passionate in talking about my evenings work, or so buzzing.

so the thing that changed for me was I went back to work, I no longer had the energy left to continue and had to drop it, and it gutted me for years.

but if you can spare the time for a fulfilling subject of your (!) choice be what it may be, I can only suggest from my own in depth study, that you will get one hell of a kick from it.

S.

I worked away from home for a year or so and when I got back volunteered with adults with learning disabilities just for a while...

7 years doing it full time and a few more part time later...

I still give up most of my spare time doing it.. albeit paid.

As the title suggests where do retired Sparkies go, or more importantly what do they do with their time? well me I help camerabloke out when I can, but it is getting difficult, helped him out last weekend spent most of the time sat on the stairs getting my breath back, don't laugh it will be your turn quicker than you think.

First and foremost, KEEP FIT!

You seem to have some health problems, but try and not let them take over, get out walking regularly.
Doesn't have to be much, one or two circuits of your local reservoir for example.

Second, keep the mind active, lots of reading and/or a technical interest.
I like pinball machines, great fun to play and very high maintenance!

Quite right.

I've made the effort to stay happily cohabiting with the same woman for 15yrs plus.

Silly me,

I could easily have paid by the hour.

have a look at "the ben heck show" element14

he makes a pinball machine and shows you how and supplies schematics etc

Mrs Trev is looking at volunteering in the courts as witness support. Google voluntary work in your area Pete, there'll be a coordinating body somewhere, you'll get called down for an informal interview just to see who you are and what makes you tick and then they'll start suggesting things to you. You might need a DBS check for some of them though

Will do mate thanks for the info, let you know the outcome

7yrs ago my dog died which not only broke my heart, it also left me at a loose end as we used to spend so much time together.

I decided to try my hand at fly-fishing as I'd always wanted to have a go.

After having some lessons I joined a local fly-fishing club. We hold open days and have events where novices and kids can come along and try their hand for free.

All my spare time now is spent either fishing or teaching someone to fish and I absolutely love it - it's a real buzz to see their eyes light up when they hook into a fish or the casting technique suddenly all comes together.

Only another 7yrs to go and work will be history for me - then I will try and move into helping less-able bodied folks try fishing.

good for you to find a hobby you really enjoy.

as soon as i get my own place im going to buy a violin.

instruments are more interesting when you play with others or you can transpose on the fly.

it gets interesting reading it in one key and changing it to another as you play, another trick i play is to mirror the octave either up or down and swap and change throughout the piece.

instruments are not too expensive unless you want to play something like aa basoon (i have only known 3 people to play them, i have played with over 200 different people in the different bands i have played in)

unless you are very strict with yourself its a good idea to get some leasons till you can site read at least 1 octave.

i don't mind fishing etc but i would rather do things in a group, sitting/standing around in the quite for hours on end is not my idea of enjoyment (unless i have a good book with me)

personally. i can't see the point of fishing... catching something i can't eat. and i'll never be able to play any sort of musical instrument as long as i have a hole in my arse. on the plus side, i do hear that masham's brewery and marstons require volunteers in the tasting department.

Pete, there’s only one logical thing for you to do. Grow yourself a p0-rn-tache and go into the movie industry. However, most of the industry is geared for the continental market and you would have to learn a couple of German phrases such as “ich habe eine lange schlange” and “das ist good ya?” Just try not to burn the candle on both ends. As a spark, your duties will have been largely ceremonial, but as an actor you will have to learn to pace yourself while your giving it every inch of your love.
