I know this has been done to death but im looking for some help and advice. I am 26 years old and have only just realy discovered what i want to do for a career. I want to retrain as an electrician. I have spoken to local training providers who have pointed me in the direction of the C & G 2365 level 2 & 3 which takes approx 30months to complete part time. And then gain work experience and apply for the NVQ level 3 which can be assesed at work. Does this sound like the best route? I am very keen and want to start my training but at a cost of £5000 i want to make sure that i actually stand a chance of ever being employed. I dont think i stand a chance on a apprenticeship because of my age. Does any body know of anyone looking for an older apprentice or an adult trainee in the Norfolk/Norwich area. Obviously I am willing to pay for my own fees and work any hours. Any help will be much appreciated.

It sounds like you have taken the right first step, and got some decent advice from training provider.
Age is not a bar to doing an apprenticeship, there are plenty of adult apprentices out and about, the only downside is that as you have found out, there is no funding, so you have to pay for it yourself.

All i can suggest is to contact local companies and see if someone will give you a try.

Cheers..........Howard

as howard says,if you can get taken on as electrician's mate, get practical experience, get the quals. then hopefully, find employment.

Certainely better than the short course which is actually laughable, fair play to you going down the 30 month route, I congratulate you, well done fella.

You have been given some sound advice here, you may even get onto the first year of the 2365 if you contact your local college asap as you would only have to catch up on the health and safety and some electrical principles. Go for it :)

Thankyou all for taking the time to respond! I appreciate all of your advice. I have applied for the 2365, the college has said there is a small chance they may run the course in Jan, if not I'll have to wait until September. So fingers crossed I can get a start at the beginning of the year. I can't actually wait, I'm really looking forward to it. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions during my training so i think this forum is invaluable as people's years of experience will be very useful.
