Hi all,

First of all, sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this question in, it seems i'm not allowed to post in the DIY forum.

Some context if needed: I am a non-technical student and I’m currently doing research on respiratory variations in coronary blood pressure traces. These coronary blood pressure traces are registered by a console, but there is no inbuilt option to register the respiration of course. Therefore I would like to convert the respiratory cycle into a pressure signal and measure this simultaneously with the heart blood pressure traces registered by the console. I would like to do this by modifying a disposable pressure transducer so the pressure sensor is built into a mask and the connector fits the consoles input requirements; this is a high-level (+- 5 volts maximum), ¼-inch phone jack input meant for mean central venous pressure, but is never used during standard procedure.
The pressure transducer has a 5 pin output:
Red: plus excitation
Grn: plus signal
Wht: minus signal
Blk: minus excitation
Ylw: ?, not specified in the specifications.

So, what I’m trying to do in a nut shell, if even possible, is to convert the pressure transducers 5 pin output into a ¼ inch audio jack. I'm not technically gifted, nor learned, and therefore I am in need of some help on this matter. It would be very much appreciated.

I wanted to consult you guys before ‘experimenting’ with electrical equipment.
My first thought was to connect both excitation wires to the sleeve probe and the plus signal to the tip probe and the negative signal to the ring probe. What do are you thought on this? I’m afraid this is going to be a bit more difficult than I had anticipated.

Kind regards,
Henk

Welcome to the forum Henk.

Usually we file all questions from non-electricians in the DIY forum but given the nature of your question, which isn't run of the mill DIY, I've left it in the General Electrical Forum because the guys who are most likely able to help you might not be around the DIY forum.

The audio jack has only 2 or 3 ways the transducer needs excitation voltage 2 wires and the transducer sends its output via another 2 wires so fitting an audio jack wont work At a guess the yellow will be shielding to reduce interference hence the 5 pin din plug

Post a link to the transducer spec and the console input if possible. This forum is mainly about electrical power installations but there a couple of us electronic engineers on here.

Henk Have you thought of contacting the manufacturers of the kit you are trying to interconnect to see if they can offer a solution. While you show the connections for the pressure transducer you do not give any details of the consoles input connections making it difficult to offer any advice. I suspect you may have to make up an interface box to connect this transducer I don't think it will be a straight forward plug swap

Anything to do with cardiac input has to be done very carefully, some faults that would normally cause a small or imperceptible electric shock could be fatal if the current went via your electrodes. Does your university have a department of biophysics or biomedical electronics?

Thank you for your replies and thoughts; learned alot. But i have found a less forward way to prospectively follow the respiration with the help of the ECG due to the changes in impedance during respiration.
Thank you for your time.
