Hi guys,

Hoping someone would be able to help with this one.

My grans house still has the good old fuse box with fuse wire which I am aware could do with upgrading to a proper circuit breaker panel.

However I have no idea on how much it would cost her and hoping someone would be able to give a rough guess-timate if I was to give you a rough break down of the house? She has kitchen, large living room, conservatory, 3 bedrooms and a bathroom (with power shower).. appreciate that this may be asking you to pluck a number out of thin sure but just after a rough guide..

you need an electrician to assess what is required. if the wiring is pvc insulated and sheathed (not rubber) there's a good chance that it will be fit for years to come.that might just leave you needing a new consumer unit at a rough guide price of £300 -£400 if the wiring is sound.

Sorry not 3 or 4k for a fuse box change. Thinking re-wire. Anything from £300 t0 £500 assuming there is not too much work on existing wiring. Usually if you have those old fuse boxes the wiring is as old which does not mean you have to re-wire.

Cheers guys. Yeah I'm aware it would need to be looked at to get a proper quote for the work so was just looking for ball park figures from people that know a dam site more than me :)

The problem my gran has had is she's had god knows how many people doing "odd jobs" around the house so no idea what sort of state the wiring will be in to be fair. Coupled with the fact that she cares for my auntie who is down syndrome meaning we've been putting off getting the work done for a while to avoid the stress on them both.

the imperial stranded cable used up until the late 70's /early 80's was of vastly superior quality to that crap that we're lumbered with these days. if it's not been subjected to misuse and/or billy the diy bodger, chance is it will last another 40 years.

Believe me I have been doing lately Murdoch... she was quoted £340 for her front door to be repaired the other week.. when I had a look at it it was just the barrel that had gone and was replaced within 20 minutes.

Really don't understand how some people can sleep at night!

Only noticed the old fuse box tonight when she asked me to have a look at a switch for her which got me wondering. Thanks for the advice all

Much appreciated telectrix. I shouldn't imagine I can force her to get the work done this side of Xmas but I'll definitely return and get some reccomendations nearer to the time
