Had a quick look at a property, which a friend has bought, to see what the electrics are like. From just doing a visual and from information from the previous owner, the property is late 60's early 70's and had additional works carried out in the 80's. My initial thoughts are that it will need rewired due to the age of the installation. However I will know better when I do a thorough inspection and tests. I have attached a picture of the fuse boxes/wiring.

What would your thoughts be from the info and picture. Would you rewire, due to age, even if the tests prove the wiring is ok?

Well I will know better next week. Hopefully it tests out ok then to save him the hassle and cost of rewiring it. I will definitely upgrade the fuse boxes though and he wants all accessories replaced. Cheers guys

Yeah board upgraded and accessories updated will do the job, who wants the hassle of a rewire anyway lol?!

My initial thoughts would be, where is the earth to the top consumer unit? unless the beer has taken over my clouded vision :)

The fuse carriers may be asbestos but sure if I don't break it, it will be fine! Famous last words!?
I was going to do away with 2 boards and just put the 1 in. Will need to extend the cables though. Crimps and heat sink at the ready.

Personally, if I was your mate, I would probably rewire the property not with standing it tests out okay. You won't know what DIY bodges are lurking, especially over the course of a few decades. Especially if had an electrician as a mate! If I was doing a property up, rewire would be one of those things on the list, if you have the finances of course. I wouldn't see it as a waste of money. But that's just the way I would approach the project.

might not need to extend. bet that the cables in the bottom board come from above, so fit your new board where the top board is now.

Like that!

the 2 twin and earths in the top board look damaged and have insulation tape around them, the top board also has no earth, that said a new DB and earthing cable may be enough if other tests prove all is okay, only an EICR can confirm, guessing online is not a good idea.
