Rewiring 40-50 year old wiring

Hi all,

As the title, just after a couple of pointers. Basically I've just bought a house, the existing wiring is the old colours but the CPC has a dark green sleeve, on top of that there is only 3 circuits for the house, a power a lighting and a 16a radial feed to the kitchen?
I've had a face plates of the socket and there is only 1 no. Socket in both bedrooms, and the middle floor is on a ring, whereas the top floor socket has been spurred off it, the plan was just to add some sockets but without spurring of a spur it looks like the ring will have to be reconnected. So I'm tempted to get a rewire, as it's going to start getting to that price with adding new sockets and the wiring bring 50 years old.

My main question is the consumer init, at the moment Ive got a plastic boxed (should be metal) unit with only one RCD and appropriate bonding to the 17th, I know ideally you'd have two RCD but to save 500 odd quid I'm wondering if it's compliant leaving alone because its existing.

Really appreciate any advice given.

But nobody in their right mind would keep an up front RCD board - unless they come to work on a horse.

Pardon my ignorance, what's so wrong with an single RCD board - I know it's ideal to have a dual to stop everything going in the event of a current imbalance. Also, the meaning of an upfront board?

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to try get a full rewire for 3 grand it's a three story two bed. we only bought it to do it up, so hopefully it will help when we come to sell it in 2 years time. It seems to be a busy time for sparks at the moment, can't seem to get any one round.

Maybe you can't seem to get anyone round because of your plans to get it done for 3 grand?

A full rewire would include an AMD 3 compliant fuseboard with 2 or more rcds

I would probably have thought 3 grand was a fair price to be fair but it clearly isn't judging by your struggle to find an electrician to do it .

This is often the problem when the customer tries to dictate how much it should cost.

You'd be better to have a spec of what you need and want and let the spark give you a quote. Rather than telling them how much you think it should cost.

When I go to quote a job and the customer is telling me how much it should cost and keep going on about it, I tell them they have got the wrong person. I'll give them a quote, not the other way around.

Maybe the op should view threads about poor installations before setting an unrealistic budget for a rewire.

Write a spec and get at least 3 quotes ....

The main struggle has been getting people round to quote and actually turn ip, last week may have just been a busy week as I've got 3 sparks coming round this week.

Don't think its been mentioned yet, will you be living in your property whilst rewire is being carried out? Will furniture need to be moved, and carpets & floor coverings?

If you can vacate the property, and there's nothing to move about, it will be cheaper than a lived in rewire. Not to mention all the dust & ----.

Go on holiday for a week.
