Hi,
Can I run cabling along a right of way, from my house at the top,to a patch of land I own, 200 yards at the end of the right of way? thanks for any advise.

Do you own the land along the proposed path of the cable? If so it is up to you.

Otherwise you would need to contact whoever owns it (or council if theirs) and get written permission to do so, but I am not a solicitor so if in doubt get professional advice.

As far as the cable itself is concerned, you might want to put in duct and then you can pull through other/replacement cables in the future without any more digging. On private land there is no specific depth requirement other than it should be deep enough not to be damaged, so around 0.5m is usually plenty. But if it crosses arable land it should be something like 1-1.2m deep to avoid damage if ploughed, etc, and the power companies have guidance for cables for footpaths and main highways, etc.

Welcome to the forum mate.
Not sure on the legalities of running cable in a 'right of way'
200 yards (183 meters) is a long distance. There will be some voltage drop on that.
What's the power for and what amperage are you looking at?

Also to add it is highly advisable to run a check for any buried utilities (gas, water, electric, telecoms) no matter what you think is around. This is usually free from sites like this (registration required):

The Health & Safety Executive also has a free publication covering all you probably need to know (and much more) and it is worth taking 1/4 hour or so of boredom to read through so you are prepared:

If it is quiet country land without any services most of that does not apply, but it is best to be aware of things no matter what. If you get in an experienced electrician they would be aware of this, or even a local builder or farmer to do the duct-digging are probably aware, but it pays to check first!

If it's a right of way you have over someone elses land then you need their permission and it needs to be a formal written agreement to save arguements over it in the future or if ownership of either property and / or land changes.
If it's a Public right of way over someone's land, the above still applies.

The cabling would run along a right of way at the back of a row of houses. The gardens exit onto the right of way.People take their wheelie bins up there, take bikes up and dogs out up to the path at the top. It's to put electric in a shed..Thanks for the advise so far.

Running a cable along a right of way I can see bringing with it all sorts of problems, re safety of others using the right of way, at the very least I would think the cable would need to be armoured and out of reach along its entire length, also the liability to you would need to be considered and accounted for with your public liability insurance.
