Yes whatever is plugged into the socket trips the RCD.

I have not tried all the sockets yet for the same fault I assumed that the ring itself had a fault

thanks for your support

Check and ensure that all terminals are tight and that polarity is correct. The socket you are using is it a spur normally your RCD will trip if you have a leakage to earth or if your live or neutral is disconnected the RCD picks up the imbalance between the two and shuts down.

Yes the connections are correct at the socket and tight.

However do you suggest there may be a disconnection on the L or N somewhere in the ring main circuit ?

I have used a FlukeSM300 socket tester to test the sockets on my ring main and all are o.k. with mcb tripping as required in each case, therefore I assumed the ring main was o.k.

Hope Im not teaching you to suck eggs an RCD monitors the live and neutral they should be equal if not RCD will trip causes can be loose connections or no connection at all on either live or neutral leaving you with faulty RCD, fault on circuit socket ok but switch on socket could also cause a problem it seems odd that it is only one socket have you tried other sockets on the circuit if lamp works ok change the socket that caused the problem if you can

Hi Acat,

No your assistance is greatly appreciated, I feel like being on who wants to be a millionaire ie lack of confidence to make a decsion.
I will do these checks tomorrow at the house in question.
Do you have any reccomendations to find the disconection quickly ?

Hi dont worry we all have to learn and this forum. Try the lamp in other sockets if all is ok the problem will be at that socket. I would have thought that if you had a problem with the circuit it would trip as soon as you turned the MCB for the circuit on. I would say from what you have said it is either the lamp with a problem or that socket also turn the socket on withou anything plugged in if it trips your socket is duff and needs replacing

Chris

I would think the circuit itself is ok otherwise when you turned the MCB on the RCD would trip, try turning the switch at the socket on without anything plugged in if it still trips your socket is duff or the lamp

Chris

Sorry for repeat my post went missing and came back again:) guess Im having a bad hair day

I think the spacing issue is down to me converting the original document from word to PDF
.
I have also got a sheet for RCD testing and cpc

I know if you are doing this test day in day out you dont need a check sheet but my thinking is if you follow a simple process and fill in the boxes then it could be a good tool for fault find. Anyway thats my feeling and thanks for the feedback

Started on the 14th now on the 17th so please god dont give me an 18th
