landing light wired weird 2way common upstairs go straight to landing light L1 and L2 links to down stairs 2 way common taken from common of 2 gang switch

Whats this got to do with the ring you're testing?

Its the way the landing was done in the owd days, the borrowed neutral.

lol old days i was not around then just thought i would mention it as was another fault found were abouts is the borrowd neutral as from the way it looks they borrowed live from downstairs by the way no upstairs down stairs lights all on one circuit

so if i test from consumer box on earth from one leg and go round the sockets i should find the break do i need to disconnect the earths at the sockets or leave connected and just go round testing to earth terminal at sockets from earth on leg 1 at the consumer unit

You could do it that way, removing sockets and testing continuity between each, or leave sockets attached and test from cu to each socket to find break.

ok thanks for advice much appreciated i will proceed tomorrow i think test from one leg at consumer unit and go round the sockets hopefully find the break

Oh ok then, if all lights together then not really a borrowed neutral.

Not a fail there mate, just how they used to do it. You'll come across that a lot just make sure it's one circuit else if it's two and you have a new split load board you may trip your r.c.d's.
