I'm wondering whether it's worth investing in a rod set? They seem quite expensive so are they worth it? How often do you use them? Do they work round tight corners? I currently use the old string method which sometimes works great but obviously has it's drawbacks!

As Murdoch says they are essential at times and can avoid a lot of damage to the fabric of a building.

I have a simple Armeg 10m set and that has done me for years. I don't see a reason the splash out on a super-rod or CK set.

Watch out for the Aldi sets, I have seen mate get badly stabbed by a splintered rod. He is a ham fisted sod though.

I've also got a set of these short ones:

330mm Rod Cable Access Kit for Tool Boxes 45275 TCAK | Draper Tools - http://www.drapertools.com/product/45275/330mm-Rod-Cable-Access-Kit-for-Tool-Boxes

Really handy when drilling holes in ceilings when there is lots of insulation above - 7mm hole, push one of these up.... go in loft and check positions before drilling downlight holes...
They are the ones I carry all the time as 3m when not planned for should be OK in domestic.
If I have planned pulls then the longer set comes out.

I like using a nail gun to shoot the cable over suspended ceilings, trouble is the person at the other end sometimes gets it in the head. I was thinking of using a harpoon instead.
This talk of nail guns prompts a little safety reminder - your workmate/apprentice is not a recommended nail gun rest ...

I have a super rod set and a cheap set. The cheap set comes out when there's a slight risk of not being able to retrieve the rod. What I will say is although expensive the super rods are brilliant and notably better than the other rods used in conjunction with the variety of attachments you get with mega set. Well worth the investment as they've saved hours on some jobs.
