rules for in london

hi everyone,

i am looking at doing a rewire for a friend of the family in wimbolden at easter time, and understand that local building control in the london area have certain rules which don't apply to the rest of the country.

things like you can't use brown blue(sleeved)+ cpc for the switches, it has to be twin brown +cpc.

any info on what the different rules are or where i can find them would be much appreciated

Agreed it does look better. Though it makes terminating far quicker having the different colours you don't have to waste time belling out cables. If it was going to catch on it would have done it by now the stuffs been avalable for years. Anyway everyone has their own way wonder when they'll bring out three core and earth with two brown and one blue or even three brown cores

You shouldn't have to bell them out as 1 of the browns has an inner layer of white insulation. So when cut you can see a white ring below the brown outer insulation.

This used to relate to commercial installations within the London boroughs, as I've stayed away from the 'smoke' for a couple of years it may not now be so ~ perhaps those of you based in the capital can enlighten us further.

i totally disagree. a job that has been done with the proper switch wires looks alot more proffesional and no need for brown slieving. or people who forget to slieve the cable. just my opinion tho.

Fair enough but IMHO It's just as professional to sleeve, anyway with all switch-plates on & rose covers tightened the customer won't appreciate you going the extra mile ~ I suppose the next sparky will though.

One reason for not using Twin Brown and Earth for switch drops is, if you want to modify it in the future you don't know which wire goes to the light.

I've spent the last six months doing bathroom and kitchen work in various london boroughs and I can say with my hand on my heart that they would happily sign off a kitchen ring wired in black, red, luminous pink and shoelaces.

When I first started I asked the usual questions such as 'where do you permit surface trunking?', 'what specific bathroom lighting do you want?' etc etc, and the answer to every question was 'whatever'.

Go nuts.
