Hi just installed new tails and moved consumer unit, cables are about 7 metres long they run inside a cavity from meter and i have then clipped on top of loft joists , on one bit though there is a heating pipe so i have gone under and clipped to side of joist.... i realise cables have to be 50 mm deep when drilling through joists does this also apply when clipping to side?

It would make sense wouldn't it.

You are trickling info and you seem bemused by the responses thus far, your opening post gave limited info for us to go on so it would be expected of members including myself to question the set-up.

Your post 4 suggests you have not put front end protection on the tails with respect to your opening post as you suggest it as a solution.

What confuses me and worries me is in post 9 - you suggest fitting a 80amp fuse in the meter box - are your talking about altering and accessing the DNO's property here or are we discussing adding a switch/fuse in the meter box?

What you are doing requires front end protection, and standard cable calc's with respect to the installation methods and any expected insulation that may be added at a future date should be included if relevent, without you forwarding this information in your original query, we cannot give you any definitive answer.

With the required loft insulation requirements for buildings new or old, at some point I expect the cables will pass through insulation and require derating unless you have taken measures to avoid this, like I mentioned, we are lacking info to give you the answers you seek.

Some DNO's get funny about you installing your own equipment within the meter cabinet/box but on the other hand they don't want you relying on their fuse for OCP for your distribution circuit..I would install a switch fuse within the cabinet/box with no qualms.

I have read that, they are 25mm double insulated tails , can i not just install a 100 amp switch fuse next to meter?

Whatever the tails are made of they can only be 3metres maximum length.
You may decide to use insulated and sheathed singles which are normally used for the meter tails for your distribution circuit, but that doesn't make them tails.

Great post, keep the replies going. Missus cooking roast lamb while I did the prep. Now reading this with the obligatory butterkist.

I agree with Lee and Dave for what it's worth

Other popcorn brands are available

Here we go again. Someone else who will never bother using the forum again. Daz
