Hi, new here.. not sure if this is in the right place so sorry if not!

Ive been an electrician for my company about 6yrs now. Which ive worked my way up in and become quite 'nestled' in to.

An awesome job opportunity has arisen but im a bit reluctant to go for it in case it has its flaws/isnt good for the long term.

Basically, id like to know if its 'OK' and legal to take sabbatical leave from a company for say, 6 months. Then take up another job, check it out. And if its not what you expected - go back to your old job

Hmmmm....

In my limited experience of sabbaticals you remain employed by your original company and are normally doing something which relates to personal development that should also benefit the employer. There is no legal requirement I am aware of for a company to allow you to take a sabbatical unless it is part of your companies policy. If you talk nicely to your employer they may welcome you back if it does not work out but they may have moved on and not want you back. Good luck which ever way you decide.

Best of asking your current employer as it will be them holding the job open for them. Although in the current climate i would be inclined to stay were you are as you never know what is going to happen in 6 months time.

Legality wise I would say highly unlikely unless it is within the same company where you could get a written contract stating what you expect.

Unfortunately now a days, jobs don’t come with guarantees. Gone are the days of a job for life.
The ball is entirely in your court. I could have stuck in my first job until the day I retired, but I wouldn’t have learnt half as much as I have.

.
That could work either way though - the company you stay with might go under while the other one might do really well, then if you hadn't taken the new job you'll be kicking yourself. I suppose the thing to do is research the other company as thoroughly as possible.

Thanks for the input!

Im trying to avoid asking my company too much as they will get the idea that ive lost interest and get rid of me (As were very low on work)

I just dont want to leave, then realise the new job isnt what i want and therefore be left with nothing..

I think maybe the best bet is to go for the interview and get as much information as i can from them first!

your not taking a sabatacle your moonlighting
How will your new employer pay you when all your details are held with your present employer
You need to take a step back weigh up the pro's and con's and then make your mind up, life is full of chance's sometimes you have to be brave !

So your present company are "very low on work" but this other company are taking people on?
If you like the sound of this new job it would be a good idea to leave your present job on good terms, then if things pick up you they might have you back.
If you've been with your present company for 6 years you must be doing something right.
