Hi
ive read,or heard somewhere that safe plates are required to be 3mm in thickness to proved adequate mechanical protection to cables passing through joists at a depth less than 50mm,is this true?
Everywhere you look they seem to be around 1-2mm max.

No, was wrong. 522.6 doesn't specify a standard thickness, just that whatever is used has to stop penetration and be earthed.

522.6.100 (v) states that it can be......."mechanically protected against damage sufficient to prevent penetration of the cable by nails, screws & the like"

No mention of earthing what ever it is you use here.

Can you seriously suggest earthing each & every steel plate installed over each notched joist...??

I think he is winding up - unless there is confusion as to what the OP requested - that of joist plates and NOT conduit. Hands up who has earthed all their joist plates and ran back to the main earthing terminal.

if it is in an earthed metallic conduit or trunking it is fine, my question to the NIC was the requirement to earth the safe plates and the outcome was no, as the cable is not in them. aslong as the safe plate is to bs standard i would say it complies :)
There is no requirement to 30mA protect cables in the floor or ceiling. just should be adaquetly protected from screws / nails if they are passing through or clipped to the side and less then 50 mm from top / bottom of joist.

LOL - Do I get the spoon of the day award?! The dangers of typing too quickly before fully engaging the brain!

too late now ive already run a 16mm earth back to the MET from a 6mm safe plate? will this be adequate to fend off any future numptys armed with an sds drill?

Only if you install the MET in a fireproof safe with 10" hardened steel casement and infinite combination lock.
