Get a charger and holder for your phone and download Navmii from the AppStore. UK maps are free, won’t use data and the extras are cheap. Other maps if you go on holiday outside of the UK are pennies.

Worth a look for free

Got the Waze app on my phone, leaves Google maps standing. Shows cameras and allows the user to input info such as traffic and breakdowns.

Don't have an iphone, but google maps on android you can download your maps for "offline mode". Would be surprised if the iphone version didn't have that as well, only lose out on traffic information not using data

Totally agree with 123 above thats that i was going to say. You can download maps for offline mode i have the full england google maps downloaded to my android phone that i downloaded on my wifi at home so i dint use any data at all on maps and they update when needed aswell

I am the saddo with a Windows phone...but, the Here Drive and Here Maps built in are very good indeed, and don't use tons of data. I have only 2Gb/month and have never run out...frankly I don't understand how it works but I use it all the time, here and in Spain, and it shows speed, speed warnings and traffic congestion etc. It's worth the ÂŁ150 for the outright purchase just for the satnav function alone. The downside is that there are a few apps I would like to have but they just aren't available for Windows.
As an aside, this is the canines cojones for mounting your phone in-car

And you can take it out and slot a credit card in the back and watch movies on your phone in the motel or wherever.

well I have downloaded a satnav app to my IPhone 8 Plus and bought a holder this morning from tescos, I will program the route on my wifi at home then switch off the roving data and see if it works which was good advice, thanks for your help fellas.

Im too tight for that clive, it costs me 40 quid a month now lol, I pay the same for my daughter with her samsung and the wifes phone is 30 so there is no way I am increasing the monthly costs any more lol, Ebeneeza I might be but with these costs and 100 a month on Virgin broadband and TV I barely afford my cider.

One thing I like with Waze is you can continue your journey. Normally I only use it when near my destination so I set it up as I leave and let it run for half a mile then shut it down then when I need it put it back on and it asks if you want to continue with your original journey, just tap continue and it resumes.

Not a fan of using phone as a sat nav when driving. To much faffing and a pain when texts and calls come through.

I use my garmin almost everyday. Was under ÂŁ100. Nothing fancy but does the job well.
