Was speaking to a lecturer today regarding PIRs he was telling me about some sparks making a song and dance on PIRs against bad installs, obviously If there is a live cable sticking out a wall then it's time to do something about it there and then but a typical one he gave me a example was a 1.5mm cable in for a 9.5kw shower, he explained if I came across this it ain't to bad and be careful what number I gave it or the way I express it to the customer, he was saying that this 1.5mm cable would just get "warm" and that's all then over the years of heating up will obviously cause tge insulation to become brittle and arch causing the possibility of a fire. (again this would show on the IRs) so again it's obvious to mark this unsatisfactory. But not worth scaring customers into taking immediate action.

How would anyone else approach this typical example I have been given?

I think your lecturer needs a change of career..... Im sorry but theres a difference between 'scare' tactics and advising the customer when something is dangerous! And a 9.5kW shower supplied by a 1.5mm is bloody well dangerous and he should not be advising impressionable trainees learning the trade that this is 'aint too bad'!!!

i can assure you that if i found a 1.5mm cable suplying the 9.5kw shower on one of my jobs i would throw the electrician off site or out of the window, i have found burned out twin 2.5mm cables supplying showers before now so i'm not sure your lecturers right

Me too. and me too.

Maybe he needs a picture drawing of what would happen should the said shower accidentally be left on all day.

It would just need a yellow pencil (for the fire) and a normal pencil for the soot and charcoal.

I would consider the possibility that your lecturer is testing your knowledge, maybe to see if your all awake?
Ask him what the current carrying capacity is for his 1.5mm cable?
What is the load on this 9.5kw shower?
What is the length of the run and reference method?

Oooooo no guys you got me wrong here!!...he's not my lecturer, he just a lecturer I know!.....also that was a example he gave me as in do I start jumping around making a song or dance scaring people or would I go about it calmly and give it a number rating and mark it unsatifactory! He was defo not indicating 1.5mm was ok.....he was just plucking up a random example!

I agree.

This bloke sounds like the one I had who said it was OK to connect the metal case of an outdoor Halogen Security light to the neutral if there was no cpc / earth present !! :dunce:

A pair of idiotsI worked for had a pub they used to send us to work in if the real work was slack. One CU still had the old rewirable fuses in it and the bar ring actually had a nail instead of a fuse. I quit on the spot when they said it was nowt to worry about since it had been there for a few weeks.

Any botcher worth his salt would at least use copper nails
