Was speaking to a lecturer today regarding PIRs he was telling me about some sparks making a song and dance on PIRs against bad installs, obviously If there is a live cable sticking out a wall then it's time to do something about it there and then but a typical one he gave me a example was a 1.5mm cable in for a 9.5kw shower, he explained if I came across this it ain't to bad and be careful what number I gave it or the way I express it to the customer, he was saying that this 1.5mm cable would just get "warm" and that's all then over the years of heating up will obviously cause tge insulation to become brittle and arch causing the possibility of a fire. (again this would show on the IRs) so again it's obvious to mark this unsatisfactory. But not worth scaring customers into taking immediate action.

How would anyone else approach this typical example I have been given?

but could you rely on a copper nail to keep the beer flowing? choice is between a fire and a riot.

Good point about keeping the beer flowing

Well in that case,we could amend the botchers book to include the galvanised variety, functional reasons must take precedence in these matters

or, as i do, use a pub with hand pull.1. there's no need for electrickery, except to see what you are drinking. 2. the beer's better.

This thread reminds of a tale told to me when I was but a young apprentice about the time a pair of lines-men got sent out to investigate some overheads that had come down in a storm....found them thrashing and arcing around down a country lane and much too much like hard work to resolve that close to knocking-off time in the rain, so drove over them with a landrover to trap the flicking end under a tire, parked up and left it like that overnight.

ps - when on a bit of a heavy bender down the pub, might want to swap the nail for a bit of M12 stud. You know, just to play safe.

For a moment there, I thought you meant a lecturer on electrical-based courses, my mistake!

The flaw in his example is that following installation, IR values on the 1.5mm cable will be as near perfect as you can imagine, then, there's a likely 10-year 'next inspection' interval sticker applied to the consumer unit.

I don't really need to go on.....

Some things are worth a 'song & dance', while I agree, others are not and are mostly down to a lack of competency on the inspectors part.

My recent favourites:

1 BS3871 breakers in use-code 2

2 No supplementary bonding in bathroom-code 1

3 Rewirable fuses in use-code 1

In the words of the mighty Aerosmith "It's the same old story, same Old Song And Dance, my friend" and that's the general quality of the PIRs that I see day to day!
