Went to work this morning, oh hi Pete, fancy having a lad for the day on job training from the local school? why not I thought, this lad spent most of the day on his I phone, if he wasn't texting he was playing cowboys with the battery drills, oh my god I need a drink, ah that's better, what a pratt, and his old man was one of the bosses what could I do? got him tomorrow as well, any advice would be appreciated, not looking forward to it, go sick, take leave or suck it up?

Went into work this morning as usual, walked in, and you know something is wrong when all around you blokes are sucking their teeth, tutt tutting and whispering behind your back, well apparently meladdos Mummy wasn't very happy with me, called me a philistine, a throw back from the dark ages, still his old man was happy, so no bother

I've had a bit of experience with work experience placements from our local technical college.
Pretty much an unmitigated disaster in every case.
Constant supervision by my guys took their time away from being productive and any simple task assigned usually had to be redone.

Gave that up as a bad job after a few attempts to do the right thing by the local community.

send the little bugger up the factory chimney tomorrow. he can sweep it in the morning, then after break, get the ladders out and he can repoint it.

The first job I got when I started my apprenticeship was cleaning the windows which hadn't been cleaned for five years.

Bear in mind our premises were two railway arches which had been filled with lots of glass panes about 8" square from about four feet from the ground right up to the top of the arch.

There were no ladders but there were some rusty bars to stop burglars getting in that I had to climb up with bucket, sponge & chammy leather and reach through the bars to get at the glass. The job took the best part of a week and my wrists and arms were scraped to buggery from the rust.

Next job was to degrease and clean the engine and engine bay of the works van - an Austin A35. For this the boss gave me a paint brush, some rags and a spraygun filled with petrol. He then ran the engine for a bit to get it warm and then let me loose on it with this damned spray gun full of petrol ...... Try that today and H&S would be apoplectic !!!

not good enough.
the phone needs to be confiscated ....he can have it back at breaktimes...but apart from that....
I think the lad should have been given a chance to prove he can follow an instruction. I'd only confiscate his phone if he ignored me when I told him not to use it when he's supposed to be working.
Other than that I agree with you and Marvo.

I had to babysit my bosses lad once , some of the other lads warned me he was like his old man a bit of a self righteous spoilt prat

I took him on site told him no phones allowed or his Dad could lose the contract and got him doing basic stuff, he actually did ok with a bit of gentle guidance

but the following monday morning all I heard was how clever his son was to pick up this stuff so easily! not a mention of well done for having the patience to show him things etc
this firm was very much a shout and throw hammers type of training school ,

They labelled one lad who was very bright, as "stupid" he left later on as he felt he was not suited for the trade whereas I thought he had the makings of a good electrician , but he always did ok when he was with me simply because I explained why he had to do things and tried to keep it interesting instead if just saying "get it done are you thick or something",
I got him after he'd been with the firm 6 mths and he barely knew how to use hand or power tools , after working with the typical boneheads you see as qualified electricians these days
