Secondary loop pump + pipe stat

Hi Guys

Recently finished a new build house.
Commissioning engineer came in the other day (2nd visit whilst I wasn't there) and mentioned we need to put a pipe stat on the secondary loop pump.
We've only ever wired these as on/ off time controlled.
Apparently it's regs (heating engineer we work with hadn't come across this either before)

Any else aware of this ?

If so I assuming it's to prevent pump running if pipe is not up not temperature ?

No never come across it before, but another scenario might be switch pump off if water is too hot, in conjunction with a time switch.
Cant imagine where you would put it on the loop as if loop is cold it would never switch pump on!

You are going to have to ask which regulation then.
In my experience some "commissioning" folk - and that especially includes LABC - have their own, unsupported, view on how things should be done.

If he means a frost stat then yes I would agree

Building regs.....

Reminds me of an LABC that insisted there was a carbon dioxide monitor fitted in a house.... and would not entertain the question "Dont you mean carbon monoxide?"

He was right, i was wrong, and nothing i could say would change his mind....

Carbon dioxide.... fitted in modern new build passive homes..... with no draughts.....

This was a 200 year old house solid walls, single glazing and a coal fire

Never in all my days heard of a stat on a secondary return circuit.
I can't think what the point would be either. They are normally timed or permanent run, depending on the building/use.

Are there long pipe runs ?

Although not a legal requirement, the HSE recommends hot water should be delivered at 50ºC within 1 minute to help combat legionnaires disease.

If you’re setting up a hot water secondary return system, you also need to consider the following:

• The hot water pipework should be insulated to BS5546 to reduce heat loss.
• The secondary return pump itself should be controlled on a timer and not allowed to work 24/7.
• A control system like a pipe stat to measure the temperature of the water or by other methods such as P.I.R sensors, can be positioned in spaces such as the bathroom en-suite and above kitchen sinks, which turn the pump on when these areas are occupied, and turn off when they’re not.
