Putting up a consevatory cieling fan tomorrow.... not done one of these before!!

Found a what looks like a a nice secure point in middle of roof area where all roof supports go back to... there is a a metal (not sure what type) angle piece and I'm going to make up a bracket and somehow fix to this...

Want to know what you chaps would use to secure so this will not in anyway become loose with movement of fan..? (dont want to go away worrying about this dropping on someone head !!!)

Was thinking a selection of M6 nuts and bolts.... using nylock nut and serated washers, and also putting a gripple wire ? Will this do the job...

Any other suggestions welcome....?

Many Thanks,

Sy

Basically you can get pre-made bolts or just drill a hole through the end part of the bolt and use a hairpin (that's what I call them, I think they have a real name though. They are like a bit of wire which look kind of like a capital R, you squeeze the ends together and poke them through the hole, once in they expand out thus making it impossible for the nut to come off the end. You will have them on your car holding the main wheel nut on, for example)

Hope this is some help.....

OR you could get a hacksaw and saw the end of the bolt lengthways when in situ, then whack the with a hammer and it will open out the two end pieces which stops the bolt coming off, but it can be a pain and it would not be removable for maintenance.

flat washer and spring (also known as split) washer., then nylock nut for extra peice opf mind. another trick i was shown before, was to drill and tap holes in steel, but only use the first cut tap . the bolt will be hard to get in but it wont want to loosen easily

Thanks Rocker....

Yeah that would do it, just that final added extra bit of security.

Might pop in a see my mechanic mate in the morning sure he will have some of those 'R' clips.. and then all I've gotta do is drill some holes through the M6 bolts! nice new cobalt I reckon.

All sorted now thanks folks....

m6 nylock nuts, bolts, seratted and spring washers, managed to get an M6 tap in at one point. also managed to drill one of the M6 bolts (before snapped my cobalt bit) and hair pined that one with an 'R' clip. And then finally knackered the threads so nuts won't be able to come off if they ever did loosen (and hopefully fan won't break down soon otherwise it will be an angle grinder to get it all down :D)

Couple of photos of my effort....

The nut and bolt set up is complete over kill. With regards to fixings you only need 1 means of locking. Backing a star and spring washer will completely defeat their design as you have distorted the clamping surface. Flat washers in conjunction with a nyloc would have done the job.

Good install otherwise :D

Trick with those is to get the blades balanced so as to reduce wobble to an absolute minimum or noe atall if you're really good

Yeah, agree....balancing the blades takes 95% of the movement out and then they only need bolts/nylocks or big self-tappers. Done a few of these now and not brained anyone yet.

Great to see people taking the time to ask on the forum though!
