Self Employed Spark's Mate

Well, been bit by the Crunch! October I'm having to go self employed & sub my services to my Boss or anybody else who'll have me??...
Any advice on taking responsibility of myself as far as Tax, CIS? Paying for courses, transport, tools etc...

& do you find many Self employed Electrical Improvers??...
