As far as I'm aware, any Joe Public can go into any electrical wholesalers and buy, for example, a consumer unit, go home and electrocute themselves. I've never been asked for any ID, and I'm sure they can't just 'tell'.

Imagine my suprise when I tried to go into my local food and drink wholesalers looking for some cheap veg oil and booze for a project I may be doing, I was stopped by what seemed to be a bloody bouncer and told that without a card I was not coming in! When asked how I get a card, I was told I should bring a picture ID and 2 documents proving I'm in the catering trade!! WTF!?

I'm sure I have a point.....

you do i had the same at a wholesalers in leeds. i have even been in our electrical wholesalers whilst joe public tries to get advise so he "does not have to pay a spark to do the job", you can probably imagine some of the replies he received :)

When I started work in the mid eighties, all the wholesalers had "TRADE ONLY" signs on the doors. If any members of the public came in they were refused and told to contact an electrician. But these signs have long gone, and the wholesalers will serve anyone now.

Electrical wholesalers rip off joe public, common fact. They aren`t going to say no to easy money. Sad as it is loyalty isn`t what goes on nowadays.

Yes of course you can buy this consumer unit thingy and this here wire cable stuff. But hang on.....a lb of carrots and a slab of carling, no sir not without a licence.

Not only ripping off the public but us as well,I can buy MK face plates cheaper at B+Q than I can at my local Neweys.Same product.......
yeh i ended up in neweys today felt like i was gen public with the price they gave me. ended up down at screwfix and saved ÂŁ50 ??

Mate of mine works for a removals company, and if its a really good deal from screwfix I get it delivered to his depot in pompey and he brings it back in his cab for me.Costs me a couple of bottles of decent red though!:D.
