Hello,

Can anyone help me please. I am trying to identify the rating of the cutout in this service head. It has been boxed in and can't tell what it is . Can anyone here tell by just looking at the photos below?

Many thanks for any help.

Chris.

Ha! Yes I almost called in the seal fairy when amazingly my client came in and had got through to her supplier (British Gas) who told her that it is a 100A fuse. Quite easy in the end. Happy days. Her outbuilding dreams can come true.

Thanks all.

Yeah right, that's a standard stock answer, they haven't got a clue what is actually fitted.
I'm fairly sure that design of cutout is only rated to 60A as that was the norm in the days when they were fitted.

I still don't see how this is going to affect a supply to an outbuilding, unless it's a massive house with an unusually large load on it!

Hi Dave,
Ye a large enough load to make me ask the question- electric shower etc etc. Chance if there is enough going on in the house and people in outbuilding are drawing quite a bit then there could be trouble.
I was very surprised that the supplier confidently told her that it is a 100A. But if that is what they said then it is what we have got to go on. They are coming to isolate the power in a couple of weeks to change the metering so we will see then. I will reply to this post to let you know what the fuse was in the end.

Thanks,

Chris.

There's a picture of my grandson as my avatar mate. Can you tell from that what his name is?
You're asking us to speculate in the same way. I think if you look really hard you might find those seal fairies mentioned ealier have been.

I would definitely get the seal fairies to whisper you the answer. If not, then assume 60A and apply diversity in the usual way. I would certainly be ignoring the advice of the supplier to assume the maximum possible fuse.

Have you ever actually measured the load on a domestic property, I mean properly with a data logging meter for a week or more. You'll be surprised how wrong you are about the load getting anywhere near causing a 60A BS88 to operate!
