Not sure if this will interest anyone, but thought I'd post it up anyway. Finally on the 2nd callout in a year for bitumen leaking from my service head Southern Electric popped round this morning to change it out. Actually to be fair Southern Electric (and the lads who did it) were really good.

Yes remember this that the NICEIC I believe or the ECA, was trying to get this pushed through. If you were a member of these you could apply for 10 unmarked seals from the network suppliers and pull the fuse and then re-fit the unmarked seals, and then send of the old seal (if there) with a form and the DNO would then reseal with a coded one.

I thought it fell through for a couple of reasons, 1 H&S and 2 Administration for the net work suppliers. I could never see a real problem with the nice plastic heads, but I have to admit there is many a time you stare at an old Cast/Bakelite carrier and go gulp.

SSE Power Distribution already allow registered electricians to remove seals to undertake work (see the following link)

There isn't a specific reason, the reg's refer to a 'main earthing terminal or bar'.

I agree though, some METs in domestic situations are rather poor.
One of the lecturers at college showed us some snaps of "METs". Nowt but thin little strips of brass flat with silly little screws fixing it to the baseboard and poor terminations to it n all. Ze bound to be high...But obviously you would test it to be sure first.........

When SSE replaced my service head (and meter) they also added a new MET which is external to the DB although is not exposed and, for some odd reason, is intended to be sealed although they didn't seal it in this case as they knew the consumer unit was due to be replaced.

My incoming supply is shared (separate cut out fuse) with the neighbouring property and their earth is also connected to the same MET, so maybe that's the reason for the ability to seal it (e.g. so I can't accidentally disconnect the neighbour's earth connection)
