Been searching the Internet for ages with no luck!

Trying to turn my garage into a gym. Need better lighting. There is a light switch but it is by the main garage door, and I am using the rear door as the entrance (main door blocked off now with shleves etc).
So I want to run an extension cable from the single plug socket to near the door (one with switches) then plug in a lamp on a cable that I can run to the ceiling (wooden rafters).

So far I have found only these (I cannot add link to the lamps, sorry!):

CFL grow lamp hanger (ebay)

WHITE CLIP-ON LIGHT LIGHTS OFFICE, STUDIO, GARAGE SHED (Amazon)

I guess I want something more like the second one but with 3-4 bulbs. Does such a thing exist?

If not I'll get 4 on the clip ons And have lots of cables.

Cheers

Jon.

hi wouldnt it be easyer to just move the swich to next to the other door.

or if you have electrical experiance why dont you get the same size cable as your socket (probily 2.5 or 4mm) then spare off the socket to a fuse spare with a 6amp fuse then you can use 1.5mm cable from there and put as many lights and switches as you want in well within reason

There are so many ways that you can achieve this but if it's worth doing then surely it's worth doing right?

Why don't you ask nicely if a kind member is local to you and see if they mind popping around to help out IF you're not able to sort it yourself?:thumbsup

I love your optimism! Easier to move a light switch than plug a lamp in? Hmmmm, not for me.

I like the idea of the party lamps, had not thought of that. But look pricey and maybe overkill.

Maybe I will attempt to extend the switch, or move it.

Grow lamps - ah, I get it. Had not even considered what they were for (or why they were called grow lamps). Just another lamp on a plug.

OK, I found an old lamp with a long cable and put up the switched extension sockets.

You can see it here: fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/554308_10151253870103980_2074563770_n.jpg

It works. probably need to find at least one more lamp from somewhere.

If you want decent lighting, just get a local sparks to put up two or three fluorescents with a switch in your preferred location. It'll be safe, efficient, and won't cost a fortune.

What you're doing with extension leads and cables hung about the place is a bodge.

OK you want to turn your garage into a gym fine no problem but you sound like you want lash all this together and that scare me as the last thing I would want to read is Keep fit guy gets killed in his homemade gym so if you are serious then think about doing this right

Is a couple of lamps plugged into an extension lead really such a dangerous thing? I have had a tele, DVD, amp and sat box plugged into one in my living for years with no problems. What is the risk?

Dont get me wrong I am not having a pop at you but you say a couple of lights of an extension lead but remember in the winter you may have a couple of electric heaters as well plus these all getting kicked around the garage so I would be happy if you had RCD protection one other point never plug the items mentioned above into one of these extension reels and if you do remember to pull all the cable out of the drum/coil

Overload, fire, disconnection times as liad down in the regs exceeded leading to electric shock, a painful death for someone to name a few potential problems

As long as extension lead is correctly fused and used what's the problem? Could plug 10 heaters into it if you liked, its gonna pop the fuse before it becomes an issue. Only issues I see would be using unfused adaptors or extension coils under big load.

Your consumer unit is in the corner of the garage and it really would not take a lot to have an electrician wire up some permanent and bright lights for you, and maybe even a few extra sockets as well.

If you are going to go with the extension lead route then try and ensure that the cables are protected from damage by clipping them to the walls.

For lights which are easy to handle, have hooks and clips and have reasonably long cables try searching for "inspection lamps", you should be able to get these for abut ÂŁ8 each. (the type that are used for inspecting around cars in garages etc.)
