A friend of mine recently had her house modernised by a government grant to bring her house up to a quality standard.

The electrical work is very shoddy, trunking has been used instead of lifting the floorboards above the light fitting. Does she have grounds for complaint for shoddy workmanship and does it comply with the electrical regulations?

You are going to have to be a bit more specific about what you think is "shoddy".

The trunking may not look great, but if that's all that was quoted/paid for, then that's what you're going to get. It doesn't make it non compliant.

What else is "wrong"?

It might look terrible, but that doesn't mean that it's dangerous or non-compliant. However, I would seriously question the standard of the rest of the installation if that is an example of their work. It's terrible. But then again, what was quoted for initially. Could be an ultra-budget rewire.

Did the grant cover this in the spec, meaning the upper floor was it carpet or wooden floors, somtimes the floors are wooden tiles and the owner says i dont want my floor damaging so trunking is used to get from A to B, you can use any system to wire a property as long as the owner specifies what they want and dont want, nomater the consequences usually....

yes it is council property. all the social housing properties in Wales have to reach a new Welsh Housing Quality Standard, a government grant has been awarded to the housing associations to bring the homes up to this new standard.

I believe that the floorboard were removed form the upstairs to rewire the sockets, but I suspect that some of the lighting circuit was forgotten and then botched up with a cheap fix.

Just looks a shoddy job to me. If I was doing the job I wouldnt dream of running trunking along the ceiling. But thank you for clarifying that the work is compliant.

If it was a flat with concrete ceiling and there is no inset conduit, please explain the alternative

Does it have a concrete ceiling

I take it this is in the valleys but where are you in Wales

It will be down to the silly amount of money being paid to do it not good for the customer but not the installers fault. Was it done in a day

No it's not a concrete ceiling ,with floorboards above, kitchen is also the same.

Neath South Wales area

Without sounding harsh.

I have done council rewires under the decent homes project.

These rewires are to bring properties up to spec not for aesthetics.
The council spec the use of trunking rather than chasing or for access reasons.

or they would have to then make good and decorate people's homes.

You would not run trucking to light fittings if you didn't need to. It's a pain in the --- and takes a lot more effort than lifting a few floor boards.

80% of the people don't want you in there homes, and provide no help moving there stuff so you can work.

The guys doing the work will be getting paid a fraction of what they should and would most likely need to turn a house around In 2 days to make a decent wage.

If its not your property then you need to take it up with who owns it.. Only reg it doest comply with is 999.999 TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORK

But no doubt a rewire in a day job where the spark is making very little cash on the job..

Then its down to one of two things, the workmen are under pressure to get in and out with no thought for quality of work or the workmen are just useless at the job

If for some reason the boards couldn't be lifted,it is almost always possible to fish the cables accross to the light

It is a woeful example of installation, but there may be a valid reason but I am struggling to justify the standard
Money talks in this day and age and the lowest tenders are the only ones considered

I was asked to test and inspect a job like yours,I came down like a ton of bricks on a housing association chairman in Aberdare who had shoddy work done by contractors from afar, instead of engaging local quality sparks because of low cost they were favouring extra cheap imports from over the bridge

Hard to suggest what to do because they don't listen to the tenants like they should do
