A friend of mine recently had her house modernised by a government grant to bring her house up to a quality standard.

The electrical work is very shoddy, trunking has been used instead of lifting the floorboards above the light fitting. Does she have grounds for complaint for shoddy workmanship and does it comply with the electrical regulations?

She didn't pay because it is social housing, although I guess the contractors were paid a fair rate by the government grant.

Just one more question, would you be happy with this type of work being carried out on your living room ceiling?

loads of these jobs done like this. one near me, they fed the cable drops through the existing tube in the walls, then fitted all accessories on surface patresses. it's the same with free loft insulation. they just throw it in, smothering downlighters and derating cables.

No, I wouldn't either, but it's Social Housing, so I'm assuming she's getting a decent place to live in at a reasonable rent.

I had one of these jobs only a week ago. Everything in trunking to save the guy sone cash on the plastering.. All though boards up for downstairs lights and upstairs through the loft. Switch drops were the only thing done in trunking at the end.

Would I be happy if it was done in my house like that.. Hell no.. But end of they day that's what the guy paying the bill has asked.. If they don't own the house then I'm affraid they will have to put up with it..
