Hi, can someone please help me. My shower is on a separate unit. My RCD has tripped, i have checked the wiring, and tried to reset the RCD but to no avail, my shower will not work. I have replaced the MCB, but still nothing. Does my RCD need replacing do you think, or could it besomething else? Thanks for any advice. Steve

The rcd is more than likely just doing its job. I think you may find its the shower itself thats the problem. Are you an electrician ?? If not I would strongly advise you to get this checked by a proffessional.:)

I am an apprentice in my first year, and am a little bit miffed as my boss put this in. When i flick the RCD switch it wont stay up, hence it will not reset. As i say, i have replaced the MCB with like for like, and just wondered if it could be the RCD, but as you say, it is probably just doing it's job. Hence i need a new shower, although it is only 18 months old and does not have too much use. Thanks for your help ,y friend. Regards Steve

Your welcome. Try turning off the local isolation to the shower ie pull switch or wall mount switch. Then turn on the rcd, then the mcb if they stay in you know you have cleared the fault as far as your local isolator. I would then suspect the shower or maybe the isolator. turn off mcb disconnect cable from shower connection block. turn mcb on and try pull switch. (Keeping those disconnected ends at the shower safe of course) If the mcb and rcd stay in, its deffo the shower.;)

Thank you yet again, have tried all that you recommended, yet the reset switch on the rcd will not stay up, and there is no power getting through to the shower at all. It is a wall mounted switch rather than a pull cord. When i press the test button and attempt to flick the rcd switch upwards to the on position, it just wont stay. The MCB will stay up however. Any other ideas? Steve

The RCD, if you remove all the load from it i.e just leave the supply cable connected and then try switching it on and it wont, then you know the RCD itself is faulty.

If it does switch on though then you have a problem elsewhere.

Sorry Steve,
Had to pop out, Lenny has it covered.
Glad its not looking like the shower. Make sure you disconnect both live and neutral from the load side of the rcd. A neutral to earth fault is just as likely to prevent the rcd resetting. Once all options have been eliminated you will be left with the culprit. Looking very much like the rcd now. Fingers crossed for you. Its cheaper than a new shower:)

By the way don't push the test button when your switching the rcd back on. if thats what your doing, it wont latch in the on position.

can i ask why you are press the test button when trying to reset the rcd? Are you pressing the button at the same time as trying to reset?
