New shower put in 9500 kw, 45 amp mcb as didn't have 40 on me & installed in 10mm cable. As soon as i pushed the power button on the shower the rcd tripped (it's an old hager board with one of those combined rcd/main switches) Everything is connected correctly, and before I pushed the power button I took a reading at the shower switch (supply side) and got 240v. Never got the chance to take a reading in the shower as I couldn't get in then due to other workers! Any ideas?

Carry out an R1R2 and insulation test on the supply with the shower disconnected and isolator on,if all ok energise the circuit with the shower still disconnected (make the ends safe)!!. The RCD should stay in.
If it does investigate the shower itself.....if it doesnt you've probably missed something when you carried out the IR test on the circuit.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Insulation resistance test on the 10mm?

Everythings fine >299.

If the rcd stays in what should I be lookin' for in the shower itself?

you should find the fault if you use all the above advice, 10 mill is not fun to work with and the CPC will be multistranded. Have a very close look to make sure all is well with the connections. I energised a cooker circuit today, and immediate trip. (I will bloody learn to stop leaving energising till late in the day ). In pure disbelief I just reset and energised again- fault cleared, probably blew the arse off a spider or something! I mention this because you say you had no time to play because of other trades. Its not unusual for a shower thats had the front off during installation to have a layer of damp over the inside, especially if there is plaster etc drying in the room. If all your tests fail- suspect the shower, however its always worth blow drying the inside of the connections and shower itself.

Yeah hopefuly get it sorted! I was also in total disbelief, couldn't understand it!

"Had to replace an old shower today at work, changed cable from 6mm to 10mm, 32amp to 40amp as it was a 9.5 kw going in. Energized it just before finish time and it tripped rcd (combined rcd, main switch-switch is like a dial). Was getting 240v at switch, was just when I was pushing the on button on the shower it tripped?"

Is this you also??????

If so what size MCB have you put in?

All sounds very dodgy to me!

If not sorry, but sounds like a very similar post...

You've lost me?

Infact i think I see what you mean now. Is there a post similar to this somewhere else? if theres a post similar to this on other forum (possibly ultimate handyman) then it could be the other apprentice I usually work with and share my homers with as I know he posts on a forum just not 100% sure what one. Ask him if his names Steve. Also it's a 45 amp mcb and can't see what you think is dodgy?!

Update: It is him I think, just phoned him, he's denying it saying "he doesn't post on ****ey forums anymore" lol. What forum was it on?
