I went to a job today to look at a shower install for work. The problem is theydont want carpets lifted and floor boards removed. All carpets are brand new just laid, all walls have been plastered and painted if not wall papered. The bathroom floor has been tiled.

Ok

So looking at the job now would it be acceptable under the regs to run the shower supply from its own d/b (main d/b is housed in the garage). Along the top of the wall in trunking through to the outside, then up the outside wall through the sofett in the loft.

Then to the switch and then back to the shower.

the outside wall is brick faced and the soffet is plastic.

The only trunking on display would be about 400mm down the bathroom wall to the shower itself.

Some sound advice would be great guys.

I do have pictures of the install route if required.

If the cable is not likely to be in danger of mechanical damage and the exposed cable (which I assume is twin +earth)is in trunking for its exposed length, then it sounds a sensible solution

Instead of trunking between the unit and the switch.perhaps some plastic conduit with end boxes and covers may give a better look than trunking

Hi Des

The exposed T+E 10mm will run above the garage and be exposed for approx 2.2 to 2.5m before entering the soffit and the loft.

I was thinking of clipping with cable clips. due to the height of cable and being out of reach. Would you recommend this or what mechanical protection would be best.

Regarding the unit and the 400mm or so distance. You mention conduit. would you get 10mm T+E in ok, what size conduit.

cheers

How the hell are they going to get the water supply to it then?

25mm would take a 10mm twin and earth
If the cable is that out of reach, forget mechanical protection its not required, clip away
The only doubts some would have is the effect of uv rays on the cable insulation.making it crack and dry up over time,I will admit I dont experience these problems that are voiced (thats not say that they dont exist)

The water supply is fine there is a header tank in loft already, so teeing off is no problem at all.

The electrical supply is the bug bearer.

From a water pipe perhaps ? :)

If its an header tank,be sure that this can be used, most showers require mains preasure which you may not have in the header tank

So Des would you recommend the trunking route up side of building to soffit. This would give UV protection then I suppose.

The water is mains fed there is a hot water tank below loft in cupboard too. Secondly a plumber is doing the water supply anyway, so It make it easy to concentrate on electrical feed.

definately dont leave normal T&E exposed to sunlight or cold outside temps. Run it in conduit or use a cable that can cope with the low temps and UV.

Hi BS
I always where possible use 10mm split concentric cable for showers, far easier to work with AND is uv protected. You will probably need to source it from cable suppliers rather than your local wholesaler but there is very little cost difference and you dont have to buy it by the coil.

If the hot water tank is just below ...... why not get plumber to create a secondary shower outlet and then all you have to do is pump it ........ am all for the easy life :) ...

I've come across quite a few electric showers above a bath with quite a few fitted at same time as new bathroom even though the boiler is a combination ....... I hope this isn't one where said plumber is about to fit one ......:D:eek:

no no ... I take it all back! Obviously, said hot water tank is not big enough and the header tank is not big enough so a separate supply has to be found and anyway why give the plumber all the work :p
