I am 16th edition got my 17th booked for next month.
I have an NVQ3 in Electrotechnical Services - Electrical Installation (Building and Structures)
I have passed C&G 2351
I have passed AM2
I am registered as an 'Installation Electrician' with the JIB

Can I sign off my own work?

I've heard that as I've passed various modules and tests regarding testing and inspection I should be able to test and sign off my own work.

I am not registered with the NIC or EIC and do not have 2391

I've got plenty of testing experience and the practical side and the paperwork side I am fine with. It's just the legallity of it.

Cheers for any help given

Steve.

Given your qualifications you are probably a lot better qualified than most of the building control inspectors in the country. However as I understand it any notifiable work in a domestic property has to be notified to building control if you are not a member of a competent person scheme.

Hope that helps

Does this mean I am fine as long as I notify building control before commencing work?

If so and I'm sorry for my lack of knowledge on this front, how would I contact them?

It seems a bit of a grey area. I was speaking to my old JTL training supervisor/on site assessor and even he couldn't give me a straight answer :p

He told me to get someone to sign it off was the easiest way.

He told me I don't need to be NIC/EIC registered but urged me to contact either elecsa or napit

NAPIT NAPIT - Home (awaiting phone call)

ELECSA Welcome to ELECSA ÂŁ370 annually + ÂŁ1.50 per job

He said they were better for sole traders. Has anybody had any experiences with either of these or know how much the NIC/EIC charge?

Thanks again

NIDEIC is about ÂŁ425 and ÂŁ1.50 a job. Sounds like your tutor is getting a back hander from them. The best competent person scheme to join is the one that you consider is best for you and what you want to do.

All of them do the same thing at the end of the day. NICEIC is best known and was/is the prefered scheme for councils etc and is widely known wherever you are.

Best to get applications of all three visit the websites ask questions then decide.

Yep it is three of your hard-eared English pounds
And they don’t even put a ski mask on when they take it from you.
At least then, you would know when you have been robbed:cool:

That's one of my favourite quotes is that......How much!!!! At least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask!!!!!!!! My mrs has walked away loads of times after I've said that to someone.....:p

hi
in order to sign off your own work you have to be registered with a competent scheme. it took me a while to find out and after getting conflicting advice from various people including my OLCI tutors!, once joined you can sign off your own work and once you get your 2391 then you can do PIR work aswell. hope this helps

otherwise before starting work inform building control then comlplete your work and do your testing etc, and call them back who will then issue you the certificate after they have inspected your work.

Not true. Anyone can inspect, test and certify work so long as they are competent to do so (this also applies both to initial verifications and periodic inspection and testing). In England and Wales only building control must be notified in advance if not a member of a so-called "competent person scheme" (for notifiable work in domestic premises only).

This has been the issue with different people giving different responses. Where have you found this info? Is it in the regs? Is from the council?
Thanks in advance

I have to agree with Risteard
The requirement to install or inspect and fill out a certificate or report is competence

When the words used are sign off,it usually infers compliance with part p which is a building reg

In order to comply with part p the competent person can join a scheme and self certificate for domestic installation work ( part p) or alternatively do it through building control

The competent person does not need to be in any scheme
Also commercial and industrial installation and periodics are not regulated

Im with that part P is voluntary even the competent person schemes will admit that however with the rip off charges by building control it is not that voluntary if you want to earn some money for yourself.
