Hi all

Got a customer who has a lightly used new in 2013 joinery thicknesser / plainer.
The single phase motor burned out for no obvious reason a few weeks ago...and has been replaced with a new item of the same type by a reputable motor company.
The new motor runs at slow speed only...
I've not been to look at it yet..but im suspecting a run capacitor fault.
But..I'm wondering..as the customer has said he thinks there may have been a fault from new as he thinks it always smelled a bit hot and plastic when running...but he assumed it was just a new unit being warm for the first time.
The previous motor really did burn out..windings were fried.
Any ideas I can take with me guys..?

Cheers

Hi,too many variables here, without more info. What is the type of machine, who diagnosed the fault, who ordered/fitted the second motor...Go on...feed the guessers:)

I assume you are talking about the new motor?
I have seen this type of thing happen before when the new motor has been incorrectly wired to the incoming supply. Especially if its a capacitor start, capacitor run type motor.
But without more info its difficult to advise

I'm going to check it this morning.
I gather it started and ran at full speed from new.
But always hot by the sound of it...the customer promised he did not ever overload it...light use only once or twice a month. ...strangely on this occasion I believe him.
He removed and replaced the motor with one supplied by a professional supplier/rewind specialist.
Once fitted it just runs slow...can't tell more till this morning...but im guessing a run cap popped when the last motor died.
And maybe original motor had a centrafugal switch failure..?
He assures me there is no bearing trouble and the machine head and drive gear spins totally freely.

was the machine 2nd hand when he bought it?

thanks everone...sorted it
just wired wrong...2 coils swapped over...job done.
shame...brand new machine 2013....the customer is the only owner.
looked at the old motor..which has 1 coil burned out and 1 ok.
run caps on both old and new were fine.
he would of had it working but the company who supplied the machine...and the new motor sent the new motor out configured wrong for the machine.
