With all the rules and regulations about getting cards for working on site etc, I wondered what are the rules for drinking Alcohol and site work, for example are you allowed to have a pint at lunch time, would you be allowed back on site? I only ask because as you may guess it's been a long time since I worked on a building site, and it was quite common to go for a beer at lunch time, is it stricter these days? would you be chucked off site if someone smelt alcohol on you?

Really depends on the site, many sites we work on have a no alcohol policy. We as a company do not allow our electricians to drink during the day and have our own breathalyser equipment and do random check to enforce this.
We have had incidents with employees who turned out to be alcoholic (unknown to us at the time) and a pint or two at lunch time was just topping them up!

We have to breathlize every shift. Drug tested every week.

years ago (1970's and 80's) it was common practice to have a pint or 2 at lunchtime. never did any harm, but these days you'd be thrown off site. talk about trade going to the dogs. sober and incompetent wins over pi$$ed and skilled.

I once worked with a alcoholic. Stereotypical bulbous nose red face. Old school. Used to carry a bottle of what I thought was orange juice under his arm everywhere. Took me 5 minutes to discover it was vodka orange lol. Anyway was put with him to install some theatre lighting was up about 10 meters on a tower. Massive out riggers on beast as the company were too tight to order a scissor lift. So here's me and Mr Red face up on the tower before I no it, the towers shaking. Hard. The slight murmur of the alcoholic shakes had set in accompanied with a little fear. I'm now stuck between a rock and a hard place. I'm wanting to get down because I'm now nervous myself and have the supervisor coming round a few times asking how we're getting on.

Think the days of day time drinking at work are long gone when we were a college though the lectures would come looking for us in the pub friday afternoon to hand out work

Has been two occasions; my bosses friend offering us a sambuca after lunch time and a bottle on site with the other trades after we've finished on a Friday.
Not enough time in my lunch break for a pint! Barely enough to get grub lol.

Years ago Friday lunchtime down pub, afternoon try and find somewhere to sleep before you drove home. Different world these days and I would report someone who smelt of drink.

Had a lad turn up one day last year, high as a kite on some drugs he'd taken early that morning on a night out. I was more shocked he'd actually turned in for work

Needless to say he had his marching orders!
