hi there
I need some help/advice installing a smiths three wire motion sensor (brown,orange,blue/white stripe) to a flood light im not an electrician so dont know what i should connect these three wires to.

any help will be very appreciated

Thanks alot nick

Hi Nick. Doesn't the sensor come with a wiring diagram of some sort? What are you using the motion sensor for ie are you adding it to an existing circuit or is it part of a new addtion?

No sorry no wiring diagram. the sensor is second hand quite old ive had them in storage for about 3 years and they werent new then. I dont even know if they work thats why i want to connect it up to test it.

i would like to add this sensor to the exsisting circuit of the flood light that i have had for years so i can have power running to it at all times but will only light up with movent is sensed

Have you got the model number of the unit as there is a very good chance I have a pdf instruction book for it.

it has no model/ serial numbers on the sensor or the mounting bracket just the word smiths written on the front of the sensor

I think Smiths used to do a system where the sensors were extra low voltage (12v?) and controlled the lighting via a processor module of some sort.

It's the wire colours that make me think that you might have one of these. If so, and you connect it to a mains light, it will go bang.

If you post up a pic or two (especially of any terminals) I might be able to tell.

Tbh mate I would just chuck that and buy a new one for the sake of a tenner :)

Fair enough i was only going to use it for the fact that it was there , taking up space i have a about 3 or 4 of them that was the worst condition one but if you cant connect them without additional parts i will just bin the lot and not bother.

Thanks for all your help and advice

As long as the existing wiring is approved for outdoor use and everything is working as planned then there is no need to replace the wiring.

That will work fine as long as the Pirs use relay switching, some don't.
