A friend of mine is in the process of renting a property out.

Can anyone answer these questions:-

1. Do smoke alarms in the property have to be mains powered w/ battery backup?

2. Do all smoke alarms in the property have to be interlinked?

3. If the answer to no. 2 is yes, where can I purchase radio controlled interlinkable alamrma at a decent price?

Thanks in advance

1... YES

2.... YES

3.... YES City's and Denmans often do cracking deals on RF Bases

the property is around 20 year old, and so is the wiring. He just wants the smoke alarms fitted, minimum fuss

Minimum fuss??? Mains wired interlinked smoke detectors are probably the most important purchase a landlord will make. They should splash out and get them all wired and interlinked via cable. Maintainence of them will be cheaper and easier for them in the future then too.

Have a look at the relevant british standards for fire alarms etc, cant remember the BS number but if you google it, you will find it.

From memory i think normal domestic rental properties have to be to Grade LD3, HMO's are different. Shoving smoke alarms in is not to be treat with contempt, it needs doing properly, cos it something goes pear shaped, you can guess where the brown stuff will go.

Cheers..........Howard

PS just had a nosey and its BS5839.
