Discuss Smoke detection in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

i've used the EI 9v wireless interconnect-they're very good but i doubt they comply(battery powered)

the mains+battery radiolink is prob the way to go at this stage -or walk away from the job

I got told off on my last inspection cos i forgot to interlink them so i had to re - run them in 3 core, lucky it was no big deal.

Get the customer to sign a declaration to say they were informed of the correct course of action ie radio link or rewire. That they have refused your advice and would like individual smokes that are not interconnected. If they refuse to sign then I would have to walk away. I know it is not a great solution but if you just walk away someone else will fit them anyway.

Yes i always interlink, but the customer will not pay for radiolink, should i just advise battery smokes, i know hes done it wrong , im just trying to make the best out of a bad job ?

Sounds like one of these customers who knows everything, tells you how to do your job and will be the first to complain / sue if something untowards were to happen

Walk away.

The only other option is to install mains (not interlinked) and get the customer to sign a disclaimer stating you are connecting to existing wirng and he is going against your advice
Also put in a paragraph like;

I understand that I am not following IEE wiring regulations, BS5839 Part 6, manufacturers guidance and building standards by instructing [insert name of electrician] to install the smoke detectors to my own specification.
I also understand that I will be liable for any failings in saftey, design and performance and absolve [insert electrician name] of any liability.
I also understand that such actions may invalidate my home insurance and this notice is classed as material information for insurance puropses and I should inform my insurer.
I also agree to this statement being made available to any investigating party without court approval should [insert name of electrician] feel it appropriate

This usually stops their nonsense and makes them see it your way

Sounds like the original spark wasn't a member of any competancy scheme and wouldn't be able to sign off, thus keen to walk away at drop of hat.
OR (more likely IMO) there never was any sparks and it's a DIYer looking to get his own work signed off.

Are BC involved. Will they be issuing a completion certificate? If so, they won't get one if the smokes aren't interconnected.

You don't need this hassle and heartache. It's very simple:
RF bases or walk.

Thanks baldelectrician, thats a great post, will be using that if nessesary, i dont think the other guy was registered PC Electrics, I think most sparks know about interconnection.
There is a " carrot dangling" of some out building supplies to be installed, wich i will be doing aswell , but im still not going to drop my standerd of work on the smokes

Sounds like on of these customers that promise future work if you are a good electrician and play ball

I hope your guard is up, and I would suggest you thrash out a price and a date for the remedial works. I would suggest you get a deposit for a third to cover materials
