Hi again! I believe this could be my last question for a little while as the chases have pretty much all gone in!

How are domestic smoke detectors wired?

I plan to have one in the hall way just outside the kitchen and one at the top of the stairs.

Do I take a feed from the lighting circuit and daisy chain them together? Or are there such things as masters and slaves with associated wiring?

I need the cheapest and easiest option... Thanks!

So you come here, ask for advice for a rewire - when many suggest getting a Part P person involved - but no you'll do it yourself and now you are asking a VERY basic question which raises the obvious question - are you sure you are completent to undertake a rewire?

2 core to fist fitting then 3core to the other ones so your using a cor to interlink the two together.

i.e if one went off(fire downstairs the other one at the top would sound aswell

and there are mixed decisons as to weather you take a sepearte supply or off of a lighting circuit
personally its lighting but lets not open that can of worms

If you don't know you shouldn't be installing one.

Thanks for your input, however if everyone believed that, we wouldn't be a very well developed nation.

Just out of interest, from your comment I'm guessing that you know how to wire and connect EVERYTHING electrical?

That's pretty amazing. However no doubt your skills are very limited for you to react in such a negative way so quickly.

I would appreciate an answer which would enable me to complete the wiring of my house correctly (as i would if somebody needed help in my field of electrical knowledge). If you can't help or feel you need to further comment with unhelpful/unwitty remarks then please post them in a separate thread of your own.

Thank you very much!

At least some people on here are able to help others out..

A little explanation of my situation if others haven't cottoned on from various other posts I've made.

I am not a domestic trained electrician, nor do I aspire to be. My experience is mainly large 50v DC power systems, large UPS installations, large industrial and commercial AC power. I also have 4 or so years experience in BMS controls.

Some of you may not have worked in any of these environments and I fully understand that your could struggle but if nobody is ever willing to ask questions and learn, how would anything ever get done?

What really gets to me is the fact that someone here has the audacity to questions my ability as an electrician?! Step in to my role, in the industry I work in and you may question your own ability...

I would totally understand your stupid statement had I been a self confessed plumber or chippy attempting to wire a domestic premesis, however for one electrician to talk to another in such a demeaning way, you should be pretty ashamed.

aico do a good mains powered wireless range, wiring instructions in the pack - very straight forward

recomend in domestic 2 smokes, 1 heat and a carbon mono

Thanks, its a small 3 bed semi. There already is a carbon monoxide detector just inside the kitchen (whee the boiler currently is). However I am having a new combi installed in the loft.

Where would you recommend installing a heat sensor? Next to the upstairs smoke detector?

Also are these required to be mains powered?

heat in kitchen, smokes on landing areas (1up 1 down) monoxide anywhere there needed - prob a cmbination heat/carbon in kitchen and carbon in boiler location.

dont think regs state mains powered but i would use them, wireless gives more freedom of location without additional wiring hassle.

1mm or 1.5mm to 1st smoke on a 6A mcb. Then 3 core from 1st smoke to all others. Brown live, grey neutral (with blue sleeving), black interlink. Some would argue wiring off a lighting circuit is a better option as you will know there is no supply to smokes in the event of a fault as the lighting circuit will be off too. Not so much of an issue these days with split rcd boards though

That explanation would make a lot of sense and would certainly explain the new bases and new boxes, with old relabelled alarm heads. I do remember...
