OK if you need a quick fix, shorten a standard socket down to just longer than the thickness of the head of the bolt, so you end up with a 17mm socket that's about 20mm deep, then use it on a extension bar

Hi, search for "channel socket 17mm" designed for unistrut. They're a bit pricey but once you have one you'll wonder how you managed before.

Why the hell have they done that ? Especially when that chart shows that nuts have stayed the same size!

I much prefer the whitworth system, spanners etc labelled by the size of the fastener, eg a 3/8 whitworth spanner fits a 3/8 whitworth bolt.
I've asked that very question more than once and I still don't know the answer. I'd guess maybe to save on raw materials but I'm not sure.

But he's welded it to the box spanner, the box spanner goes in the strut and the ratchet or breaker bar goes into the socket.

Yes , that's why he's welded a box spanner to it, the box spanner fits into the strut, the socket adapts it to accept 1/2" square drive.

In general, 1/2 drive sockets have thicker walls than 3/8 drive sockets.
This is because they are intended to be used with higher loads.
Also it appears that cheaper sockets have thicker walls, most likely due to the metal used not being as robust as that used in the more expensive sockets.
I use SnapOn, because I like the warranty and the procedure for replacing broken tools.

Hen I did my apprenticeship we used a piece of 20 mm Conduit and bashed a bolt into the end then hit the flats to shape. Then drilled a 8 mm hole in the end and put a bit if rod through it. Worked a treat ☺

i approve of any bodge that doesnt require the purchasing of over-priced product-specific tools

good work men !

;-)

yep done that myself in the past just flattened a bit of 20mm conduit to make a box spanner with a piece rod through it.

3/8 socket + adapter it is then.

im not going to buy two channel sockets for £40 when i got a decent 1/2 bahco set for not much more

At least that set has got 6 point sockets, much better than the 12 point nonsense that seems to be the norm now.
