posting on behalf of a friend

he been looking at work with domestic appliances and gas breakdowns etc and alot are mentioning socket and see testers, personally ive not done much with them as im mainly involved in fire and security so i stick with my trusty fluke dmm and intelligent battery tester, now i get the jist they are used for carrying out basic electrical safety checks etc just wondering if anyone has an individual preference or alternative etc

many thanks

Socket and see is a brand name there are other types that do the same thing (bit like hoover for vacuum cleaner). Depends really what the person is going to do as there is quite a range. The ordinary socket testers are very useful and will test for a number of faults plus give you an audible signal when power is on. They cost about £10 depending on type. If they are doing a lot of testing then socket adapters are pretty much essential to save taking sockets apart (you can also get the same for bulbs), when doing R1+R2 measurements. I would think the socket tester is a worthwhile investment for anyone.

k thanks for that, must admit i have a socket tester myself that plugs in and indicates various faults etc, coutessey of my previous company when my van got done over

i think re my friend i know when i used to do washing machines years ago we had a multimeter and insulation/resistance tester for basic electrical safety checks and fault finding i can only presume he means more of a multi function tester to include loop tests etc

thanks for the info, dont really come across much like i say im fire and security more than anything so digital multimeter, telephone line tester, sound and light level meters and a battery discharge tester etc are my main uses i also have a clamp for central battery systems etc oh and my trusty laptop!
